8th Grade:
In addition to the basic supplies of several packs of loose-leaf notebook paper, pens (black or blue ink only), pencils, pencil pouch/holder, student planner, appropriate clothes and shoes for PE/Gym class, and a 3 inch binder with dividers, students will need the following items throughout their eighth grade school year:

Rising To The Top 5th Grade Academy
Rising To The Top 5th Grade Academy is August 10-12, 2015 from 8-11 am.  All 5th graders are welcome to attend.  Parents must provide transportation.  The purpose of the academy is to allow students the opportunity to get to know their teachers, curricula and expectations of 5th Grade and Horton Middle School.  If you have any questions, please call 919-542-2303.

8th Grade at Duke
Our 8th grade students visited Duke University  and had the special opportunity of meeting Tyrus Jones-Most Outstanding Player of the Final Four- The educational trip to Duke was well-received by our 8th graders!
Arlington Cemetery-Laying of the Wreath
The gift of flowers at a memorial site is a ritual that occurs around the world, understood in every culture. The floral tributes at funerals bespeak both the beauty and the brevity of life and evoke memories of other days. These type of memorials are made each day at Arlington National Cemetery, at the dozens of funeral services occurring there and in solitary communion with a departed loved one. (Arlington Website).

Four of our Horton students were chosen for the "Laying of the Wreath" on Wednesday: Emily Taylor, Abby Johnson, Alana Davis and Andrew Norman

 
Things to Brag About!
Mrs. Tracy Miller was nominated and awarded WRAL Teacher of the Week. We are so proud of her accomplishments and congratulate her for the recognition that is well-deserved!

We also announce that Mr. Casey Spillman has been selected as the Horton Middle School Teacher of the Year. This recognition comes from his peers and also well-deserved.

Service Project
The Mu Omicron Omega Chapter of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc donated 12 book bags filled with school supplies to Horton Middle School. The book bags will be dispersed to students in need. This is another example of school and community working together! Thank you
Science Olympians
Fifteen Horton students competed in the Science Olympiad events at Campbell University last week. Of the 15 students competing, eight earned medals with their "design and build" event: Nathan Terrel, Konrad Feher, Jesenia Schwankl, Nicole Feher, Meredith Clouse, Riley Crisp, Emily Taylor, and Anna Marie Trotter. Special mention of  Jesenia, Riley, and Meredith for their first- place showing of "Picture This." Science Olympiad is  a STEM extra-curricular activity that showcases "design and build" events along with tested knowledge based on Meteorology and Anatomy. Thanks to our participating students and Mr. Walgate, the club sponsor and 8th grade science teacher at Horton for representing Chatham County in this regional event.

Horton Middle School Parent/Family Involvement Survey
 
As partners in your child’s education, your input is valued. This survey asks for your opinions about what Horton Middle School does to get you involved in your child’s education for this school year. Please take a few minutes to respond to this parent survey. Horton Bullying Reporting Form

 

 

A reporting system for Horton Middle School has been created to appropriately identify, report, investigate, and respond to situations of bullying and harassment.

 

There are several methods for reporting suspected bullying incidents:

 

> You can contact Horton Middle School by phone and report it to school personnel

> You can make a report in person

> You can complete the online Horton Bullying Form

 

This form can be completed HERE, and can also be found under the "For Families" and " For Student" menus located on the left hand side of the Horton website. 

 

 

 

ZUMBA-ZUMBA-ZUMBA
Looking for a way to have fun, get fit, and support Horton?  Come on out to Zumba class every Wednesday in the Multi-Purpose room from 6-7.  The cost is $3 per person Children under 12 are free.  All of the proceeds go directly to the school.  This class will make you smile and lift your mood.  Give it a try!  
Labels for Education
What a wonderful opportunity to earn supplies for our school using the labels from every day products that you purchase for family use! All it takes is a little effort to remove the UPC label or provide the cap imprinted with the UPC label. This would be a great service project for your children. Send in your labels or caps from the following products. Once again, thank you for your support!
