Volunteer Approval Process
Dear Parents and Members of the community,

Horton Middle School is always in need of parent and community volunteers to assist in various tasks such as Field Trips, Teacher/Media Assistants and Test Proctoring. We always appreciate your willingness to help and value your time and efforts. Before you choose to volunteer, please remember to complete the VOLUNTEER APPROVAL PROCESS implemented by the Board of Education.

If you completed the volunteer application last year, it must be renewed this year also....The process for renewal is simple and easy but must be completed. Click on the link below for the original volunteer process and the renewal process.

Thank you in advance for your willingness to play such an important part in our school community

Dear Horton Families,

If your son/daughter is trying out for a fall sport, they have to have a physical turned into the office/athletic director by September 8th. Physicals are good for one year only. So if your son/daughter had their physical done on September 21st, 2013 their physical is still good up until September 21st, 2014. With that being said, you will still need an-up-to date physical done after the one-year physical is out of date. That means that your son/daughter will be unable to participate in practice or any afterschool sports until the physical is up to date. Again the cut-off date to have your son/daughter’s physical turned into the office/athletic director is September 8th.

Dear Horton Families,
Please remember to send a note with your son/daughter if there is a change in transportation status. (For example, If a student is walking instead of a car or bus rider.) We also request that you call the school prior to noon alerting us of any  transportation change.

Again thank you for your support and cooperation.
Dear Horton Families,

Welcome to the 2014-2015 school year!

My name is Lisa Norwood and I am the interim principal at Horton Middle School. I am a retired middle school principal and have over forty years of experience in education.  I am also a resident of Pittsboro. The families I met at the 5th grade Academy made me feel very welcomed.  I look forward to the opportunity of meeting more Horton Wildcats and their parents at Open House tomorrow.

The district's theme this year is  "Growing Together... Cultivating Success." Horton Middle School is adding "Every Minute Counts" as we strive to be the best we can be as a school and students. I look forward to working together as partners in the education of your sons and daughters.

Please know, I am glad to be here.

Sincerely,
Lisa Norwood
Interim Principal
Attention Parents of Fifth Grade Students!
Thanks so much to all that attended the Fifth Grade Academy this week, We hope all involved found it helpful...We certainly enjoyed meeting our new Horton Wildcats. We want to share a few bits of information that will hopefully help with the transition to Horton.

School Hours and Transportation
The school day will run from 8:00 to 2:45 this school year. Students are permitted on campus at 7:30 and are dismissed to classes at 7:40. All students that arrive on campus between 7:30 and 7:40 must report to the cafeteria. Walkers will be dismissed at 2:45 and car riders will be dismissed at 2:48. Bus riders will begin to be dismissed at 2:51.  All walkers must have written permission to walk home. No student will be allowed to walk home unless we have written permission.

Class Information
All fifth grade classes will be self-contained this school year. Fifth graders will have one teacher for all four subject areas. Fifth graders will also have PE, art, music, media and lab time with Classworks. Classworks is designed to help meet the individual needs of all students by offering both extra assistance and enrichment activities. More information concerning Classworks will be provided.

PE Dress
Fifth graders will not have to "dress out" for PE this school year. They will need appropriate shoes for PE days, but will not be required to change clothes before participating in class. PE will be every other day. At open house, teachers will be able to share if fifth grade students need PE shoes for the first day of school.

Drop-Off and Pick-Up
Horton's traffic pattern changes during daily drop-off and pick-up times. Parents that drive students to school will use George Moses Horton Road to drop off and pick up students. In the AM, between 7:30 AM - 8:05 AM all traffic must enter campus on George Moses Horton Road, circle behind campus, then drop students off at the flag pole located by the front office. This procedure is again followed between 2:30 PM - 3:15 PM. Horton staff and SRO Cook will be on site to help with this process. During drop-off and pick-up, Horton's main entrance becomes a one-way exit. Please be sure to drop students off at the front entrance, near the flag pole, to ensure adult supervision of all students during these times. Diagrams of this procedure will be available in the multi-purpose room at open house.

Open House
Open House is scheduled for Thursday, August  21 from 6:00 PM - 7:30 PM. Fifth and sixth grade parents will meet our new interim principal, Mrs. Norwood, in the Multi-Purpose Room from 6:00 -6:15. Students and parents will then be able to travel to the 5th and 6th grade hallways. Homerooms will be provided at open house. Homerooms lists will be posted in every grade level hallway and bus information will also be provided. This is also a great time to stop by classrooms and meet teachers. If you're unfamiliar with our campus, no worries, we will have guides on hand to help out.

Questions/Concerns??
We understand that this is an important transition for both fifth graders and fifth grade parents. Please don't hesitate contacting the school with any questions or concern. Normally, our weekly update occurs through phone and email on Sunday evenings. Please let us know if you are not receiving these messages.

Thank you for your support and continued cooperation,

Mrs. Norwood, Interim Principal
Mr. Sudol, Assistant Principal
